Ponsonby Intermediate Asbestos Cleanup
6 January 2021
Kia ora tātou,
While the ongoing cleanup from December’s fire isn’t the ideal way to head into 2021, I’m pleased to report the work on the school site has been progressing well. All activities are being carried out in line with WorkSafe guidelines, and air monitoring is in place until the work is complete.
The contractors have been hard at work over the holiday break with a large number of clean-up staff on site. Activities have been informed by asbestos testing results and have included:
- Washing down of the roofs and exterior of the affected buildings
- Thorough interior clean of the hall and two classrooms
- Removal of some contaminated soil and some areas of artificial turf
- Thorough clean-down of a retaining wall and car park area
The cleanup is scheduled for completion in the next week and we’re expecting the electrical supply and other services to be reinstated next week. The upshot of all of this is that we will be operational as a school within the next few weeks.
We’ll post a further update once the cleanup is complete, and another to confirm we are all ready to go for what’s going to be a great year. For further information, both the WorkSafe and Auckland Regional Public Health websites have extensive information about asbestos.
